APALCE Foundation

Between 1967 and 1969 many families from Spain were bringing their handicapped children to The Centre for Neurological Rehabilitation in Pennsylvania. Because of their dedication and effort, The CNR agreed to help them and other children who could not come to the United States by starting a service in Spain.

In October of 1969, Dr. John F. Unruh led a group of specialists to Spain. By 1972 an Association for the Help of Brain Injured People was founded (APALACE). In 1981 it was declared a Public Society and in 1992, it became a National Foundation. Today, The APALACE Foundation has a volunteer board of directors with Mrs. Dolores de Oya de Calderon as President and Director. Mrs. Calderon has served selflessly since 1986.

APALCE has enabled the CNR to provided comprehensive rehabilitation services

in Barcelona, Spain, a beautiful Mediterranean city on the north east coast of the country. Dr. Unruh still makes every trip and sees every child personally. He is assisted by his wife and a full time staff who has been with the Foundation for many years.

APALCE, under the direction of Dr. Unruh, provides individualized, comprehensive therapy programs for children and adults who have suffered from any type of brain injury. Regardless of age or degree of the problem, APALCE has helped children and adults from many countries. Currently, families come to The APALCE Foundation from Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland, England, Tunisia, Morocco and of course from all over Spain. Autism , Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Head Injury, Brain Injury, Stroke, Developmental Delay, Learning Difficulties, Down Syndrome and Reading problems are all eligible for services.

Evaluations are completed, goals are developed, orientation is provided and comprehensive home programs are taught to the parents and families. All the rehabilitation programs are then done in the home by the family and others in some cases.

The programs provided, generally, contain different sensory motor activities aimed at training the nervous system to function better. This technology has been pioneered by the Centre for Neurological Rehabilitation since 1965 and has been successfully helping thousands of families with handicapped children or adults. This type of program, when administered properly, can speed up the natural neurological maturing of the nervous system. It can influence the direction of that maturing process so that it occurs in more correct ways. It can also retrain the injured brain so that healthy cells can take over the work of the injured ones.

In addition, other important aspects are considered. Diet, health, nutrition, sleep, breathing and behavior are discussed. When problems exist in these areas, plans are developed to help and are part of the overall program that The APALCE Foundation offers.

In addition to Dr. Unruh and his staff, families have available to them a neurologist and a vision specialist. When it is necessary, the specialists are seen the same day which minimizes the time needed at the clinic. In addition, there are other leading specialists who have worked with APALCE for many years and who act as expert consultants in their fields when needed.

The rehabilitation services provided by the APALCE Foundation are the best available in Southern Europe. The experience of the staff is enormous and the results achieved with the thousands of children and adults who have worked on their home programs under the direction of Dr. Unruh has been exciting and gratifying.
